Collioure’s Ancient History
This article covers Collioure from 600 BC when Phoenician and Greek seafarers used its natural port for trading, through to 200 BC, when French Gallic tribes overran Greek control. After that, it covers the Romans who conquered the area around 100 BC for seven centuries until the Visigoths, a Germanic tribe, took over in 600 AD and holding it until the Arabs conquered it in the early 8th century. Finally, it covers Charlemagne who reclaimed Collioure and integrated it into his empire, setting the stage for its future development under French rule.

Collioure’s Medieval History
This article Collioure’s medieval history from 900 to 1500 AD starting with the town under the rule of the first Count of Roussillon, Guifred, in the 9th century. By 1172, Collioure became part of the Kingdom of Aragon the construction of the Château Royal de Collioure began. By 1344, internal strife led to the reunification of Roussillon with Aragon under Peter III, turning Collioure into a major port for trade across the Mediterranean. By 1460, the French influence began with King Louis XI of France intervening in a Catalan revolt, marking the start of French rule, although it was marred by frequent uprisings and attacks.

Collioure’s Renaissance History
This article covers Collioure during Renaissance period, from 1500 to 1800, starting with Ferdinand and Isabella of Aragon taking control, followed by the Hapsburg Charles V of Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, leading to a phase of decline and instability. The region faced continuous revolts from the Catalans against Spanish rule until the Treaty of Pyrenees in 1659, which redrew the Franco-Spanish border. By the time of the French Revolution in 1789, the revolutionary era sparked a cultural and political awakening among the local population, challenging the ancien régime and ambivalence towards French rule.

Collioure’s Modern History
This article covers Collioure's modern history, 1800 to the present day, encapsulates its evolution from a thriving fishing hub to a recognized artistic sanctuary. In the 19th century, Collioure's fishing industry flourished, transitioning from traditional Catalan boats to modern trawlers and establishing itself as a significant Mediterranean port. By the 20th century, Collioure had become a magnet for artists, drawing influential figures like Matisse, Derain, and later, Picasso, who were captivated by its unique light and vibrant colours.
