Ibis Styles Collioure Hotel Review
My quick hotel review for those in a hurry:
There’s an Ibis almost everywhere you go and I’ve stayed at many over the years and value how reliable they are – you know what you’re getting with an Ibis – having said that, Ibis Style Collioure definitely wasn’t my favourite Ibis experience.
What’s it like?
For those who don’t know Ibis, you can find them across Europe – there are over 2000 worldwide -and they have various levels of Ibis and I think Ibis Styles is the more budget option, but it does have a rooftop swimming pool and fitness room!
Owned by the gigantic Accor group, Ibis is normally a very solid reliable choice if a little dull – you get a reliable breakfast with lots of choice, the rooms are quiet and clean and it does the job, but it’s not what I would call a holiday hotel – it’s a little too utilitarian.
Having said that, for those not on a budget especially during the high season when prices in Collioure can be eye-watering, Ibis Styles can be good for families on a budget, though I have some caveats (see below).
My Deep Dive Review of Ibis Styles Collioure
Opened a few years ago, Ibis Styles is located between Collioure and Port Vendres, so it’s convenient for both towns and is a good budget option, though I do have some critiques of the hotel.
It’s right on the coast with views of the sea and located opposite to the Lidl supermarket, so ideal for stocking up on food and drink.
As I said, during July and August, for families on a budget (and these days, everyone’s on a budget frankly), Ibis Styles is affordable and not too far from Collioure and Port Vendres, though unless you’re into sport, it’s quite a hike to either, so it will best if you have a car.
Moving on to parking, Ibis Styles Collioure does have some free parking, but it’s pretty limited – I would say up to 12 cars. This is fine during the off-season when I stayed, but during busy periods, you’ll need to find somewhere else to park. Theres’s a Lidl car park opposite, but I’m not sure if they close it during the night or not.
Ibis has several rooms options, including larger rooms with families, that have a double bed and single bed, as well as single and double rooms.
What I liked about Ibis Styles Collioure:
The prices – during the peak season. During the low season, I actually stayed here, and was surprised at the price since it was quite high for what it is and the hotel was not full at all.
If you’re a family using a family room and manage to snag free parking, then it’s good value and reliable.
As I said, I’m normally a fan of Ibis hotels, so ordinarily I would have given it a great review!
What I liked less about Ibis Styles Collioure:
I’m a light sleeper and, despite using ear plugs, I found it hard to sleep in the hotel.
Normally, I really value Ibis hotels as they are normally pretty sound-proofed and solid.
But, I think the hotel is made of some kind of steel structure instead of concrete – a little like Meccano or Lego!
So, when people are walking around or up the stairs, I could hear it. Likewise, when people plugged in a charger, I could hear it.
Then, the icing on the cake, was a motion sensor in the bathroom, so if you wandered in, the light would spring on. I’ve never seen this anywhere else on this plant except for restaurants.
During the night, stumbling to the toilet, when you wander past the bathroom, the light still springs on and it’s very bright and won’t turn off for a few minutes.
Can you imagine a whole family and how embarrassing and irritating would be every time they even pass the bathroom to the loo, the lights still go on and wake everybody up?
All round, this hotel is not conducive to a great night’s sleep.
Also, the location is not great – it’s really too far in to Collioure, so you’ll need to try and find a bus in to town or drive in to town and park somewhere.
In Collioure during peak season, it’s hard and expensive to find parking, so in some ways, Ibis Styles Collioure might be a false economy for the budget conscious?
Having said that, there are some smaller beaches close by that you can walk to.
Lastly, the tea and coffee is served in flimsy paper cup and doesn’t include milk, but dried creamer instead. I wouldn’t complain if this was a seriously cheap hotel, but for me, this was the final straw since it was quite expensive for what it was.
Normally, I love Ibis, but these kind of details – the metallic building material, the automatic light and cheap tea and coffee – are indicative of a lack of respect – Ibis must try harder with this hotel!
