La Bona Casa Collioure Hotel Review
My quick hotel review for those in a hurry:
More of a guest house than a hotel, La Bona Casa or the “good house”, is a personal experience and founded by Helene in 2020 and her passion shines through. A classic B&B in the heart of Collioure.
What’s it like?
La Bona Casa has been a guest house for a long time over the years, but it was rather dated and had seen better days when Helene took over and she has really bought a homey feel to the place.
Rooms are small, but perfectly formed and they all different, but all with a nice sense of style and light muted colours that match Collioure’s blue skies.
La Bona Casa is very well situated as it’s just on the way to the main throughfare to the beachfront and very convenient for the Wednesday market.
My Deep Dive Review of La Bona Casa Collioure Hotel
Helene is French, but also a woman of the world – having lived and worked in Argentina for many years and, as she herself told me, had “practically lived in hotels for much of my life”.
Coming back to France, she wanted a change of scenery and a new challenge and returned to Collioure, a place she used to holiday as a child, for inspiration and found that La Bona Casa was looking for someone to succeed the proprietor.
Despite having no experience in hospitality or hotels, she took the plunge in 2020, during the depths of Covid, and hasn’t looked back. She told me that it’s probably been the most work in her life, but also probably the most satisfying (though, she would like some more chance to sleep!).
Since 2020, she has put everything into restoring the rooms and refurbishing them and putting her personal touches to each room. She said she sees it really as a guest house where she welcomes and meets people from all over the world (which she displays with post-it notes on her guestbook wall in her reception – see my photo).
What I liked about
La Bona Casa:
You don’t forget Helene in a hurry – she’s passionate, very French and yet international at the same time – I love hotels (sorry, guest houses) with character and personality – and La Bona Casa is exactly that.
The rooms are small, but have a cosy feel to them, are well-furnished and clean and use the original period features.
What I liked less about
La Bona Casa:
It is a small and intimate hotel, so you will rub shoulders with and get to know other guests. Not everyone likes that. It is a guest house, so relatively basic, so if you are expecting red carpet treatment, then it’s probably not for you.
Everything you wanted to know about La Bona Casa, but were too afraid to ask!
